Akkam – AlUla: A Journey That Shapes Young Men from the Desert

In the heart of AlUla, where ancient mountains meet a sky studded with stars, the idea of “Akkam” was born — a youth program unlike any traditional camp. It’s not just a recreational trip, but a values-based experience designed specifically for university students seeking something more than a break from routine.

The Idea Behind the Program

Akkam runs for a full week, spent entirely in the embrace of AlUla, far from the noise of city life. The goal? To give young people a genuine chance to explore the desert — and more importantly, to discover themselves through practical life skills that stay with them long after the trip ends.

A Partnership That Makes an Impact

The program was carried out in partnership with Somou Charity Association, running three times over the course of a year to deliver winter camps and camping experiences rich in content and meaning. The project reached fifty students, who lived unforgettable days among the sands and mountains of AlUla.

What Do Participants Learn?

Akkam stands out for its unique blend of heritage skills and knowledge, including:

Falconry

An ancient art that connects young people to their ancestors’ heritage, teaching patience and discipline.

Traditional Fire-Starting

A skill that seems simple on the surface, but carries deep lessons in self-reliance.

Astronomy

Under AlUla’s clear night sky, participants get an engaging, hands-on introduction to stars and planets.

Desert Skills

From navigating without a compass to reading the land, skills that shape every participant’s character.

Why It Leaves a Lasting Impact

What sets Akkam apart is that it doesn’t just offer fun activities — it builds a complete experience that nurtures a sense of responsibility and belonging among young people. Between lighting a fire and reading the stars, participants learn lessons in teamwork, leadership, and patience — lessons no classroom can teach.

Akkam is a living example of how the desert can become a classroom, and how a single week can change the way a young person sees themselves and the world around them.
