The First Mosque in Islam

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Al-Madinah after his migration from Makkah in 622 CE, the first structure he built was a mosque at Quba, on the city's southern edge. It holds the distinction of being the first mosque in Islamic history, and tradition holds that two rak'ahs prayed within its walls carry the reward of a complete Umrah. Its white domes and twin minarets remain one of the most visited sites in the city today.

Where the Qibla Changed

Masjid al-Qiblatain — the Mosque of the Two Qiblas — marks the spot where the Prophet ﷺ was leading prayer when he received the revelation instructing Muslims to face Makkah rather than Jerusalem. For centuries the mosque held two mihrabs in testimony to that moment; today it stands rebuilt in gleaming white stone, one of the few mosques in the world tied to a single, specific revelation.

History

Uhud — A Mountain of History

Rising over Al-Madinah's northern edge, Mount Uhud was the site of one of early Islam's most significant battles in 625 CE, and is spoken of in a hadith as a mountain that "loves us, and we love it." Its rust-red slopes and the graves at its foot are visited today not as a monument to conflict, but as a place of reflection on the earliest years of the Muslim community.
