Going Home
Upon arrival in Funchal, meet your representative and enjoy a comfortable transfer to your hotel. After check-in and some time to settle in, the afternoon program begins. In the afternoon, set out on a guided walking tour through Funchal’s charming Old Town. Stroll along its historic streets, discover iconic landmarks, and experience the traditional atmosphere that defines this ancient district, rich in culture, history, and local life.
Dinner
Enjoy one of Madeira’s most famous experiences: the thrilling descent from Monte in traditional wicker basket cars. Dating back to the 19th century, these carts are guided by two men in traditional dress and straw hats. The ride covers 2 km in about 10 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 30 km/h, from the scenic village of Monte down to Livramento. The afternoon is at leisure to relax or explore Funchal independently.
Today, explore Madeira’s scenic south coast and continue west through some of the island’s most dramatic landscapes. Enjoy panoramic views from a mountain pass before descending along rugged sea cliffs where Atlantic waves crash below. Stop at Cabo Girão, Europe’s highest sea cliff, then visit Ribeira Brava, known for its fertile land and banana plantations. Continue through Canhas to the Paúl da Serra plateau, a vast green highland and starting point of many levadas, offering views of both coasts on clear days. The tour continues to Porto Moniz to see its famous natural volcanic pools, followed by stops in the seaside village of Seixal and the historic town of São Vicente, set amid impressive mountain scenery.
After exploring Madeira’s west, today focuses on the island’s east. Start at the Terreiro da Luta viewpoint for panoramic views over Funchal, then continue to Pico do Arieiro, one of the highest driveable peaks, offering spectacular scenery. Descend through ancient laurel forests, passing Santana with its traditional straw-roofed houses, and stop at Ribeiro Frio, known for its levada walks, trout pools, and endemic flora. Continue to Ponta de São Lourenço, a dramatic volcanic peninsula and protected natural reserve, before ending the day in Machico, a peaceful bay and Madeira’s historic landing site.
Today, head inland to explore Madeira’s scenic heart, ending in Curral das Freiras, a village named after the nuns of Santa Clara Convent. Start at Eira do Serrado viewpoint for stunning panoramic views, then descend through forests and countryside to Curral das Freiras, a valley village known for its agriculture and delicious chestnuts. On the way back, stop in Câmara de Lobos, a charming fishing village that inspired Winston Churchill, and sample Poncha, Madeira’s famous sugarcane spirit. Free Afternoon for leisure.
Morning: Snorkeling at Madeira Marine Eco Park Start the day exploring Madeira’s underwater beauty at the Marine Eco Park. From the water, admire the island’s stunning cliffs while swimming among colorful fish and vibrant marine life. At the dive center, you’ll receive a safety briefing and a brief snorkeling introduction before gearing up for this unforgettable aquatic adventure. Free Afternoon to relax or explore at your own pace.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and enjoy a comfortable transfer to the airport. Bid farewell to Madeira, taking with you unforgettable memories of the island’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality.
